Practical Application of

Intimate Relationship Skills

PAIRS stands for the Practical Application of Intimate Relationship Skills. It’s an evidence-based, experiential approach to strengthening communication, deepening connection, and creating more loving, lasting relationships.

Developed over nearly half a century, PAIRS has helped hundreds of thousands of individuals, couples, and families learn the skills that make love last — not just the “falling in love” part, but the staying in love part.

Whether your relationship is in crisis, coasting, or thriving, PAIRS offers tools anyone can use to:

✅ Communicate honestly — without blaming or shutting down
✅ Listen with empathy — even when it’s hard to hear
✅ Understand emotional triggers and heal old wounds
✅ Strengthen trust, closeness, and intimacy
✅ Resolve conflicts with dignity and respect
✅ Build a roadmap for a future you both want

From weekend retreats and online classes to guided exercises through the PAIRS Yodi app, PAIRS helps people from all walks of life reconnect with themselves and each other — with compassion, courage, and clarity.

Because love shouldn’t be guesswork. And no one should have to figure it out alone.

Why PAIRS?

Most relationships don’t fall apart because people stop caring — they fall apart because people don’t know what they don’t know.

PAIRS calls this “unconscious incompetence.”

It means we’re operating in our most important relationships — as partners, parents, friends — without the skills we were never taught. Not in school. Not growing up. Not even in therapy.

It’s not enough to want your relationship to work.

It takes practical, usable skills to navigate the stress, conflict, misunderstandings, and emotional triggers that naturally come up in real life — especially in our closest connections.

PAIRS gently walks you through the process of becoming consciously competent:

🧠 Learning how emotions work — and how to express them safely
👂 Mastering the art of listening without judgment or defense
🛠 Replacing criticism, avoidance, and assumptions with tools for repair
❤️ Deepening empathy, trust, and emotional intimacy
🚦Recognizing patterns that sabotage connection — and how to change them

Whether you’re trying to heal a relationship in crisis, strengthen a growing bond, or simply understand yourself better, PAIRS gives you a clear path — step by step — to becoming more skillful, confident, and connected in the relationships that matter most.

Because when we know better, we can love better.

How Does PAIRS Work?

PAIRS works by teaching you the relationship skills you never learned — and giving you real opportunities to practice them in a safe, supportive environment.

Each PAIRS program is guided by a trained facilitator who:

✔ Introduces practical relationship tools
✔ Demonstrates how they work in everyday life
✔ Invites you to practice them in ways that feel natural and comfortable

Think of it like learning to ride a bicycle — at first, you may need “training wheels.” But with guidance, repetition, and support, these skills become second nature — habits you can count on, in any relationship, for the rest of your life.

You’ll learn to:

🗣 Communicate clearly and honestly
💬 Express emotions without fear or blame
👂 Listen deeply and respond with empathy
⚖️ Resolve conflict without power struggles
💞 Rebuild trust and rekindle intimacy

Practice is the key.

The more you use the tools, the more they become part of how you live and love.

Different PAIRS programs offer different levels of support:

  • Short workshops introduce key tools quickly — the responsibility is on you to apply and practice them in daily life.
  • Extended courses give you more time, feedback, and reinforcement as you build confidence and competence with each new skill.

No matter the format, the goal is the same:
To help you grow the emotional muscles that make relationships strong, resilient, and deeply fulfilling.

PAIRS Foundation

Since 1983, the mission of PAIRS Foundation, a 501(c)(3) non-profit charity, has been to teach those attitudes, emotional understandings, and behaviors that nurture and sustain healthy relationships and to make this knowledge broadly available on behalf of a safer, saner, more loving world. We accomplish our mission by developing and delivering evidence-based, best practices in marriage, family and couples education, conducting research, and training instructors worldwide.

PAIRS supports research, education and related charitable activities to permanently interrupt cycles of inter-generational poverty by strengthening families as the foundation of resilient neighborhoods and communities.

More about us

"This weekend has been ground breaking for my husband and me. There are issues we have been dealing with for 19 years. Two of these issues seem to be starting to be resolved just in these few days. I am a cancer survivor and he suffers from PTSD (from being sent to Iraq). We have found a closeness we haven’t had in years – just from being at this seminar. "
